Hydro Power

Hydroelectric Power is the means of producing electricity by using water as it goes downhill to turn a turbine.

Traditionally, this would be associated with the use of large dams, although existing rivers may also be used.

Clearly, dams are not good for the local environment and can and do cause the destruction of vast tracts of land when first built.

There are, however, many existing reservoirs in the UK and this would therefore be a ready made resource for this form of power production.

A useful offshoot of a hydro electric scheme is the ability to store excess power. When there is spare capacity in the grid, this can be used to pump water back up into a reservoir and it is then ready to be used by letting the water back down via the turbines when the demand increases again.
