LETTER:
POWER STRUGGLE
WE now have
lies, damned lies and green statistics - Greenpeace, nuclear power, Welsh
politicians, government ministers and even Tony Blair have been telling us that
the 30 wind turbines off the North Wales coast will provide power to 50,000
homes.
What they failed to mention was 50,000 homes in the middle of the
night or afternoon, providing no one switches on the kettle. On a good day the
North Hoyle wind farm, off Rhyl, has capacity to allow 50,000 homes to use up to
1200 watts each (that's a toaster or one third of a kettle).
Why didn't
they tell us that during peak demand times these turbines can only supply 5,000
homes? The other occupants of the 45,000 homes will, apparently, have to eat out,
shower at the local baths and use the laundrette.
The facts: the 32 wind
turbines' maximum output equals 60,000,000 watts, and 60,000,000 divided by
50,000 equals 1200 watts.
